SIL Worker Killed in Bomb Blast

Mary Gardner Mary Gardner (55), was the lone fatality of a terrorist explosion on March 23 at a bus stop in Jerusalem. Gardner had been studying Hebrew at Hebrew University as part of her training to become a consultant to translators of the Old Testament. She had worked with SIL International since 1989, primarily in Togo, West Africa, as a linguist and translator among the Ife people. Gardner came from Scotland and was a member of Wycliffe Bible Translators in the United Kingdom. She was respected and well-liked by both colleagues and members of the Ife language community. According to SIL Togo-Benin director, Lee Higdon, "Mary will be sorely missed by her colleagues and the Ife community, in whom she had invested more than 20 years of her life, making major contributions to Ife language development and the translation into Ife of the New Testament, published in 2009. She was loved and respected by those who knew and worked with her." Gardner is survived by her parents and siblings.
