Central African Republic awards the Chevalier dans l'Ordre de la Medaille de la Reconnaissance Centrafricaine
(December 2009) During the Central African Republic (CAR) Independence Day celebrations, President Francois Bozize awarded two representatives of SIL with the medal of recognition for SIL's partnership with ethnolinguistic minorities in the CAR. Receiving the awards on behalf of SIL-CAR were Director Rolf Buehler and Administrative Assistant Blaise Yangue.
The Chevalier dans l'Ordre de la Medaille de la Reconnaissance Centrafricaine (Knight of the Order of the Medal of Recognition by the CAR) is a prestigious award. This high honor was given for the positive effect of SIL’s language development work in the life and progress of the country.
In his comments following the ceremony, Blaise Yangue noted that SIL wished to express its gratitude, recognizing that this is an exceptional response from the government to an international organization working in the CAR.
SIL works in the CAR under agreements with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation. To date, it has conducted linguistic research in more than a dozen of CAR’s 72 languages. Worldwide, SIL International works with language communities to facilitate language development through research, advocacy, literacy and training.
As a nongovernmental organization, SIL has special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations and with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
