SIL International awarded Papua New Guinea’s Independence Anniversary Medal of Appreciation

(18 September 2006) Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea (PNG), Sir Michael Somare, awarded SIL International the Independence Anniversary Medal of Appreciation and a certificate during an embassy reception in New York to celebrate the 31st anniversary of PNG’s independence. The reception held in the Helmsley Hotel was attended by over 200 diplomats from other Pacific nations, UN officers and embassy staff.

During his speech, Sir Somare expressed his country’s deep appreciation for the services SIL has provided to PNG over the past 50 years. A former educator, Sir Somare is a dynamic advocate for language development and multilingual education in his country.
