SIL International Media Release
Official opening of Shilong Bai bilingual education preschool program
(November 2006) Government leaders from the People’s Republic of China gathered with SIL personnel and representatives of other bilingual education projects in the region to join the Bai people of Shilong village in celebrating the official opening of the Shilong Bai bilingual education preschool program. This new preschool curriculum is an addition to the adult mother-tongue literacy program started in 2004.
Government leaders from provincial, county, district and village levels expressed great enthusiasm and support for the project which encourages mother-tongue literacy among people whose mother tongue has until now been limited to oral expression.
The project also introduces modern teaching techniques in a region where previously only traditional rote learning has been used. These techniques have been adapted with SIL assistance to be specifically suitable to a rural village setting.
