Guidelines for Stage 3 of the Energetic approach

• Explore cultural themes with friends.

  • Try to understand the values and assumptions underlying the way people act.
  • Investigate and understand the culture in depth.
• Participate in as many community activities as possible, and ask your friends to talk about the activities.

Here are some structured things to do when you use the Stage 3 Energetic approach to semi-structured language learning:

• Use The Ethnographic Interview technique.

  • Conduct interviews with people.
  • Sit down with a colleague and discuss new vocabulary and semantic relationships you discover.
• Use The Life History Interview technique.

• Use The Record for Correction technique.

  • Use this method to work on accuracy.
• Use a Checklist of Language Functions and Situations to expand the number of situations in which you can function effectively in the language.

Here are some unstructured things to do when you use the Stage 3 Energetic approach in unstructured language learning:

• Spend time with people in a wide range of communication situations.

• Pay attention to the way people say things, as well as what they say.
• Keep a language learning journal.
