Larson and Smalley 1984

Larson, Donald N. and William A. Smalley. 1984. Becoming bilingual: A guide to language learning. Lanham, MD: University Press of America, Inc. 398pp. (Earlier edition: 1972. Pasadena, CA: William Carey Library.)

Sections on: the language learner, a language program, techniques, wider communication (linguistic background information on dialects, translation, varieties). Index

This book, originally published in 1972 by the William Carey Library, was a seminal work in the area of independent language learning in a field context. Among other things it contains suggestions for a number of ways to manipulate language data in order to learn it. It contains the seeds for the language learning cycle popularized by Brewster and Brewster in LAMP. It is worth reading for historical value, but also for some of the ideas, which are still useful today.
