Objective

    To be able to interpret what you hear according to the rules of the society, and know whether or not someone is being insulting, rude, or polite

Strategies
 

Here are some interactional skills strategies for Stage 3 guidelines for listening:

 
  • Analysis

    Listen to exchanges between people and base your interpretation on what you know. Then talk to a language associate (LA) about it for further insight, and to clear up any misinterpretations you made.

  • Selective attention

    Be observant of verbal and nonverbal cues that are given for specific types of interactions.

  • Practice

    Make an effort to incorporate into your interactions with people the rules you have learned for good dialogue, and so forth through your observation and discussion with a LA and other helpful sources.
