Acrobat Reader 4.0 'having a problem opening external documents' error message

Problem: When running Acrobat Reader 4.0 to access .pdf files, you see an error message "having a problem opening 'external' documents."

Solution

  1. Uninstall all previous versions of Acrobat Reader.
    Tip: Use Control Panel...Add or remove Programs.
  2. Manually delete any Acrobat Reader 3.0 files or directories left over after the uninstall.
  3. Reinstall Acrobat Reader 4.0 or a later version.
