Stage 2 guidelines for speaking: Appropriate Varieties

 

Objectives
 

Here are some objectives for learning appropriate varieties for speaking in Stage 2:

 

    To learn neutral varieties first, ones that are not markedly informal (such as slang) or strongly marked regional dialects

  • To learn how to show politeness and respect to people who have high status in the society, such as those who are older or in positions of authority
  • To learn what varieties to use with children
  • To learn varieties associated with particular settings or situations you find yourself in frequently, such as church or your work
Strategies
 

Here are some strategies for learning appropriate varieties for speaking in Stage 2:

 
  • Review

    Review insights gained through listening and reading and incorporate them into your speech.

  • Analysis

    Analyze social situations of everyday life and how people act in them. Identify typical scripts and variations of scripts based on differences in social relationships among participants.

  • Practice

    Use role-play techniques to practice appropriate roles in different social situations.

  • Ask for correction

    Convince a language associate or other friends in the society that you really want to be corrected if you act inappropriately in a social situation.
